Prom Night

7:52:00 PM

A few weeks ago, I had one of the best experiences ever.... which was attending prom. It was a night that I felt absolutely glamorous & definitely like a queen. I must mention that the stress that came along leading up to the big day is something I would not wish on anyone, but aside from that, everything else about prom itself was enchanting. Our senior prom took place a week after our graduation.... which made things a bit complicated because my head was wrapped around so many other things. The late date of our prom resulted into a lot of last minute details for me. Honestly, I was not certain if I was actually going to attend it because so many things about the event was up in the air. Finally and luckily, I established my decision to go about 2 weeks before the prom. This meant I had 2 weeks to do everything that I needed to do.

THE DRESS

Being a fashionista, ofcourse I had my dress idea already in my mind a year before. I also knew that I wanted something designed and made rather than bought from a store. Considering my very small physique, I always felt that having a dress custom-made would avoid an ill-fitting look. Fortunately, I was able to find a well known designer/dress-maker locally, who could create a gown in literally fourteen days. I initially wanted something similar to a dramatic Elie Saab runway design with ostrich feathers but considering the time availability, I opted for something much more simpler. I decided to go with a masterpiece that resembled the dress actress Teyonah Parris wore at the 2014 Emmy's. I knew this look would portray my aim... which was to be elegant, stylish, and unique. A few things that distinguished my gown from the Christian Siriano (Resort 2015) ensemble was the colour and the top. Keeping in mind that I was indeed attending a prom with the theme "Las Vegas- Viva Royale", I went with a rich and very radiant red hue. The upper portion maintained the stripe-like pattern in red and black. In addition, instead of the straight cut bodice, it had a sweet heart neckline.
Everything about the dress was flawless to me. I was extremely pleased that Alicia, the creator, fashion extraordinaire, and owner of The Dollhaus Designs, here in the Bahamas completed such a task in a so little time. She made so many others this prom season, each being peculiar, and I can certainly say that she gave immense effort when generating my own. Truth is, I had my very first fitting the day before prom and although fear arose when I barely could've zipped it up whiles getting dressed before the event, I got it on and felt amazing. The gown fitted me like a glove. The beautiful silhouette, sensational cape, and lengthy train that swept the floor was absolutely breath-taking.

BEAUTY/ACCESSORIES

Getting beautified was the part that was quite easy. Although the glam process took up almost my entire day, I looked spectacular. My request to the hair stylist was an effortless up-do. I never like my hair in buns but I wanted to do something for a change and I definitely believed the sleek look would complement the dress' design. I did not have an actual vision of my make-up before hand so I allowed my make-up artist to do her thing. She gave me a fascinating smoky-eye beat with black and blue shadows along with red lips. Honestly, I was afraid... I never thought that I could rock red lips the way I did, being dark skin.... but the look was impeccable. My mother is a professional nail technician so I surely took advantage of her creative talent. Everyone wondered why I did not paint my finger nails red or black, but I made them pop by going with a mint green tone with gold stones. In fact, my dress maker recommended that I do this and it pretty much worked perfectly.

Something blue... check! Something old? Not so sure about that... Something borrowed.... check! Believe it or not, shopping for accessories was a bit difficult. I knew I wanted everything black but it took me a while to find pieces that truly caught my eye. I wore a pair of black heels on my feet that I bought from a shoe store in the city and I found nice jewellery in a small boutique. The dangling earrings were ideal with my high hair bun, and the glossy bracelet was there to match. You are probably still wondering what exactly did I borrow? Well, I could not find a black clutch anywhere.... This was very upsetting because I knew if had more days of planning, I would have bought one online and had it shipped to me. I called my aunt three hours before the prom and informed her that I was out of a clutch. After searching her closet, she found me one which was super fitting. What a life saver!

THE EVENT

If you did not recognize at this point that I was dateless at prom, then now you should know. Other girls would probably be depressed about the situation, but I felt fine about it. I guess because I have always been the independent type. Again, late planning was a result of this. My date was actually supposed to come in from Florida, but knowing how much I would want him to do in regards to finding a tailor made suit and other details in fourteen days would have been way too hectic. Being one of the few that went solo was actually great. I enjoyed myself and did not regret anything. I arrived confidently, and my "Coming to America" idea of an entrance scored me runner-up for "Best Entrance". Thanks to one of my best friends and my cousin for the help.

Again, I felt like a queen. I took less selfies and more photos of my outstanding dress.

Shout out to my lovely friends and fellow classmates for making it a night that I will never forget.

Here's a photo of me and my friend who won best dressed. Congrats to her!

In the end, I realized why so many people always made it a priority to attend prom. It was a memorable night and I had a blast. I'm insanely thankful that my parents and other family members were able to afford me the final senior year experience... especially my mom (photo'd below) who was very supportive...

I plan to tell my children this very same story in the future and I cannot wait. ;)
