Fashion: NYFW - Fall 2016 (Most Memorable Shows)
11:45:00 AM
Some of the most talked about shows in the history of New York fashion week took place last week. This was the season of memorable moments making fashion more than just designs. Whether its was through collections, the concept behind a specific show or even pop culture celebrities putting aside their original talent and modelling for a day, many brands certainly had remarkable presentations that no one could ever forget. Here were some reasons for being so notable:
For The Cause: A few shows had impactful messages behind it. Through fashion, some designers were able to bring powerful awareness to current society ills and did so impressively.
The Pyer Moss show focused on police brutality. Models who were styled by singer Erykah Badu walked the runway in officer caps, combat boots wrapped in tape, and even buttons with printed "feel better" faces on them to address depression. There was also a tribute to activist Marshawn McCarrel who recently committed suicide after being consumed with so much campaigning. It was pretty much a very moving presentation.
The annual Go Red for Women show was striking as usual. The theme of their charitable event is always to bring recognition to heart problems females face and this season, it was superb. Singer Monica, Sofia Richie, Pia Wurtzbach, Skylar Diggins, Tamron Hall and more participated in the red dress collection.
One of my favorite designers, Zac Posen supported the "Black Lives Matter" movement by having a line up of all black models. It was truly inspiring to see people of color showcasing amazing designs by a prominent designer who isn't even black himself.
Prints: There were a large amount of collections that included a lot of prints which always makes a statement each season.
Tadashi Shoji showed garments mainly hosting a tribal print... some were even cleverly designed with a body-ink/tattoo illusion giving dress-making a new meaning.
Kye had an amusing collection as well. The Korean originated label mixed oriental patterns in a few pieces that are perfect for street wear.
Bibhu Mohapatra settled on Chinese history for his looks. With influence from a fierce Asian empress, the clothing were all flavorful in color and patterns.
Yigal Azrouel made use of plush prints... artistic paisley and brocade designs were showcased as well as articles inspired by the beauty of a black rose.
Zimmermann's exhibition had intricate looks all around. This time however, there was an Indian motif.
Monique Lhuillier's collection was like an explosion of summer apparel. She fused bold colors and floral prints in almost every ensemble.
Lela Rose created a garden-like theme with her similar picturesque collection.
Parties: Some presentations were like actual parties this year. Designers turned down a traditional runway and displayed garments in the ambience of a celebration.
Diane von Furstenberg's show was the only spot you could see top models like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid dancing to disco music which matched her funky collection.
Not sure what was most bizarre, the fact that Kanye West had his Yeezy action packed presentation at Madison Square Gardens, he had a listening event for his album while designs were on display or let's talk about Lamar Odom in attendance. The show paved a way for many in the future. He basically had a concert and fashion show in one... Oh, and Naomi Campbell led the line up.
Many flocked to Laquan Smith's expo where models stood in the midst of good music and slight refreshments were being served. Totally a cool way to enjoy the already favourable assortment of clothing he had to offer.
Elegance: Elegance is a pivotal factor many fashion names adopted this season to produce a momentous show. Most of these numbers I could possibly see on the red carpet at an award show very soon.
Marchesa had a dramatic reveal of regal designs. Models sauntered in arresting pieces bedecked with 3D flower petals and sparkly ornaments.
Muted shades and soft fabrics dominated Carolina Herrera's refreshing collection.
At Oscar de la Renta's show, skirts and dresses were in abundance but viewers were given an unexpected twist. Unlike the usual couture material used to construct garments for this brand, we saw how leather could be considered graceful.
Leanne Marshall made use of dainty fabrics however, with lots of sheer.
Black & White: A monochrome color range can be considered simple but compelling. Designers who opted for black and white had monumental shows.
Calvin Klein Collection presented in uniformity. Black and white was even incorporated in prints like plaid.
Rachel Zoe's showcase appeared to be dreamy. With the use of feather and fur in addition to cream and grey scale articles, she stirred up a snowy instinct indoors.
Most looks at the DKNY presentation had the refined shades.
In addition, Alexander Wang's line up had color synchrony.
The collaborative Fenty x Puma line had its launch. It's sporty styling aspect stuck to the single hues and of course Rihanna walked out at the end!
Statement: Seeing celebrities we'd never envision gracing the runway or presentations we never thought would be possible, a few brands made the unimaginable happen.
Lady Gaga modelled in the Marc Jacobs show... so suitable for its extraordinary gothic aesthetic.
Tanya Taylor covered her muses in floral apparel but had an illustrative presentation as they were surrounded by bare trees and showered with 3D birds.
Color: Nevermind the fact that this was time for Fall collections. Some designers displayed colourful arrangements that could be cool for the summer or even spring!
Chromat experimented with wiring and models rocked neon pieces!
Novis offered color-blocking silhouettes.
Jeremy Scott is never dull. He had a very fun collection embracing almost everything from cartoons, to guitars and even supreme cowgirl style.
Structure is one thing but Delpozo also mastered dynamic colors this season....
