Fashion Review: Black Girls Rock 2016

2:31:00 AM

"Hopefully one day I'll be raising my own little black girl who rocks" said Rihanna at the podium during the influential event on Friday night. It's amazing that BET already gives recognition to those of color but this award show solely for black ladies?! What a time to be alive. The annual Black Girls Rock function was held in New Jersey and this year many melanin muvas in the limelight showed up in support of inspiring young women of their race. The presentation urges black girls that they are destined for greatness and helps to uplift those who may have a low self esteem because of their skin tone. As one who struggled with esteem issues in the past, I am able to relate and I am strongly empowered by the movement. Aside from the impactful show, red carpet arrivals was also fun to see. Here are my favorites:

Rihanna flossed in a flowy blouse and a pair of shorts dressing it up with an oversized fur coat and embellished pointed toe Miu Miu pumps.

This chocolate beauty, Kelly Rowland looked absolutely ravishing in a white cropped jumpsuit designed with a deep V-neck line.

Singer Monica perfectly styled a green velvet cross over skirt with a mesh black long sleeve top and strappy sandal heels.

Revealing some cleavage as well with a plunging jumpsuit, this time in an olive hue, Eva Marcille popped the ensemble by wearing a layered blush-pink long coat and carried an artsy clutch.

What's better than a golden gown donned by a brown girl? Teyonah Parris gave it her all in a Jani Khosla piece.

Just heavenly! Danai Gurira stepped out in a silky white halter number.

Little miss Skai Jackson could not be missed with her colorful outfit. Red trousers, a yellow blouse and blue shoes, went together well.

Claire Sulmers opted for a monochrome grey look incorporating the all-in-one trend as well.

Leave it up to internet breaking star Kyemah McEntyre to steal the show. She was in a picturesque masterpiece that had a "power to the people" inspired portrait painted at the back.

Young actress from the hit show "Black-ish", Yara Shahidi posed in red and white.

Marsha Ambrosius served up elegance in a floor sweeping black garment.

Jazmine Sullivan had two incredible draped looks. One the red carpet she wore black, and she gave a soulful performance in a sparkly nude item.

Both of Andra Day's looks were fashionable as well. She went all the way retro also sporting a jumpsuit and frock.

Black girls may rock but the gents could not be left out of course. Actor Hosea Chanchez represented for the black fellas in a smart all green fit.

This awards which will actually be aired on television tonight was actually a pleasing one to follow up last weekend... Not only were there awesome moments but the fashion was definitely worth talking about.
