Style Tip: The Art of Layering

5:16:00 PM

You guessed it.... It's that time of the year! Winter came knocking a bit late and temperatures are dropping dramatically. Unless you live near a desert, I'm talking Death Valley itself... I'm sure over the past few weeks you've felt some chill. Some cities are experiencing significant snow storms and the frosty weather is even hitting your favorite vacation island. I'm not a meteorologist therefore I cannot tell you how long this cold period will last, however what I can do is suggest a few ways to dress during this season to give you some sort of comfort. Grab a mug of coffee and sip as I explain to you how to creatively layer your clothing with this week's style tip.

Layering is just like constructing a house or making a sandwich.... You keep adding and adding until you have a flattering piece. If you find yourself stressing over the fact that you have nothing to wear although your closet is filled to capacity, it's time to put on your fashionable thinking cap and master the art of layering.
Your outfit is never enough when it's 30 degrees outside. The bitter climate usually leaves you conflicted over whether to be stylish or to be warm. With layering, you can be both. You may think that its a difficult technique but its actually a pretty uncomplicated process. Although your wispy knits alone will not be able cut it when winds are kicking up, that just means you have to build your outfits to get cozy. Here are three things you must keep in mind when layering:

1) Make your look refined:

A modest and polished outfit is always better than walking around like a massive elephant. I mean for your benefit, you should not want to carry so much weight around especially if you're always on the go. Many believe the skill of layering is to appear as if you're wearing everything in your closet but it is so much better when its unnoticeable that you are all bundled up. Replace clashy necklaces with stylish scarves and hide a lightweight beanie beneath your fabulous floppy hat. To prevent having a very busy look, limit yourself to only three to four layers. Your final layer should always be the thickest. For example, leather and wool are some of the heaviest fabrics commonly used for outer wear... Therefore, you should always save those big boys for the finishing product of your outffit.

As you can see, with this look, I'm wearing a long sleeve top and a bomber jacket with an asymmetrical mini skirt. Topping it off with a large trench coat was just enough and I have on skin fitted tights to maintain the preppy stlye.

2) Make use of anything:

If you realize you don't have that much coats in your closet and the weather comes unexpectedly, do not panic. Before spending your money on hefty boots and boring fleeces, try your best to make use of what you already have. Anything can be layered for warmth. Stack up and wear two shirts under a blouse. Double your pants... Skinny girls like me would appreciate the extra tightness. Armour up your favourite summer dress with a few cardigans and a scarf. If you don't have scarves, try a turtle neck underneath your staple jacket and you're good to go. For your feet? Wear fluffy socks with your chic booties (even if its the ugly pair granny once made for you)... No one will see them!
Here I made very good use of my leather overalls. Ofcourse, the tights underneath are to keep my legs warm but with a collared blouse and a denim jacket to go along, I felt complete.

3) Mix and Match
Be as innovative as possible with your looks. With layering, its almost inevitable not to have a unique outfit. Incorporate prints and do not be afraid to pair contrasting patterns. Combine colors and you'll be surprised to know how great everything looks once you have it on. Play with textures. Pick out a winter poncho that has a show stopping textile and arrange it with a longsleeve top.

This blended outfit is ideal. I'm wearing a denim top and insulated it with a navy cashmere sweater. Totally dismissing any color-coding aspect, I opted for black tights, a striped green and blue mini skirt and a white trench.

Here are some other looks I wore this week that included layering:

I also decided to create a few inspiring digital outfits that can help you even further with this practical way of dressing for the winter:

Do some more layering with your fits this season. Forget about being snowed in, or if you're forced to go out do not be petrified about being uncomfortable... Walk the icy streets in style! If this style tip assisted you out in anyway, post a layered look and tag me for a feature!
